John Kenneth White talked about his book Barack Obama’s America: How New Conceptions of Race, Family and Religion Ended the Reagan Era (University of Michigan Press; August 4, 2009). In his book Mr. White argues that Barack Obama’s election marks a new era in U.S. politics, based largely on many demographic changes. Using polls, census data, popular media, and political anecdotes, he describe a “new” society, in which interracial marriage, divorce, single motherhood, and cohabitation are no longer taboo, in which gay rights gain ground, and people attend church more for entertainment and community than for religion. He responded to questions submitted by members of the audience.

He also discussed the reasons, values, and motivation behind Kennedy’s decisions, and responded to audience telephone calls, faxes, and electronic mail. A brief video biography of President Kennedy was shown at the beginning of the segment. November 22, 2003 was the 40th anniversary of President Kennedy’s assassination.

Author John Kenneth White discussed his book The Values Divide: American Politics and Culture in Transition, published by Chatham House Publishers. Professor White noted that American values had evolved and changed over the last century, while having played an increasingly influential role in public and private life. He concluded from his data that people were reexamining their standards, which included how they worked, lived, and interacted with each other in a country whose population was rapidly changing. This reassessment raised questions concerning what it meant to be American. The book explored the political ramifications of the “values divide” which, according to Mr. White, went much deeper than cultural conflicts between Republicans and Democrats. After his presentation, Mr. White answered questions from members of the audience.
